Chattr vs Signal
Signal is the benchmark for private messaging: end-to-end encryption by default, open source, run by a non-profit. Chattr solves a different problem — staying reachable where messengers get blocked, and asking for no personal details at sign-up.
If maximum cryptographic protection of your messages is the priority, choose Signal — it has end-to-end encryption by default and open source code. Choose Chattr if you need a connection on a network where other messengers don't work, and want to sign up without a phone number.

When to choose Chattr
- You're on a network where Signal is blocked and don't want to configure a VPN or proxy.
- You don't want your messenger tied to a phone number.
- You want one client across iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows with no extra setup.
When to choose Signal
- End-to-end encryption of your messages is a hard requirement.
- You need the code to be open and independently audited.
- The people you talk to are already on Signal.
Frequently asked questions
Does Chattr have end-to-end encryption like Signal?
No. In Chattr, messages are encrypted in transit and on the server, which is not end-to-end encryption as Signal implements it. Chattr does not use your conversations for advertising and does not pass them to third parties, but Signal's protection model is stricter.
Is Chattr more secure than Signal?
On the cryptographic model, no — Signal has end-to-end encryption by default and open source code. Chattr is stronger elsewhere: it requires no phone number to register and keeps working on networks where Signal is blocked.
Does Chattr need a phone number like Signal?
No. Registration in Chattr is anonymous and no phone number is required. Signal asks for a phone number when you create an account.
Can I use Chattr and Signal at the same time?
Yes. They are separate apps and do not conflict. Many people keep Signal for their most sensitive conversations and use Chattr for everyday messaging where Signal is unavailable.
